Coach: Bim Barry (fifth year).
1992-93: Third in Sea View League, 5-2 league dual-meet record.
Key returners: Ryan Adams, Jr., 800; Jay Berg-Hansen, Sr., SP-DT; Trent Bryson, Sr., 3200; Shahram Dezahd, Jr., 1600; Chris Edwards, Sr., 110 HH, 300 IH; Stephen Gonzales, Sr., SP, DT, 100; Dan Obeji, Sr., PV; Wade Tift, Sr., SP, DT; Aaron Ward, Jr., 400.
Key newcomer: John Benzinger, Jr., HJ.
Outlook: A perennial throwing powerhouse, the Sailors will not disappoint this season. Throwing coach Tony Ciarelli’s troops are led by Tift, a fourth-place finisher in last year’s State meet and third in the National Scholastic meet (59-1 1/2). Gonzales, third in the shotput in league finals a year ago, has some impressive discus credentials with a seventh-place finish in last year’s Orange County meet. Distance aces Bryson and Dezahd give the Sailors some power in the long races, and Ward and Adams will handle the middle distances. Edwards has run 15.5 in the high hurdles, and Berg-Hansen will provide backup in the throws. Obeji and Benzinger lead the Sailors’ vertical jumpers.
