Pop Album Chart : Good Heavens! A ‘Sign’ Disco Is Back

Is “The Sign” a sign of the times--that disco is rising from the grave? That’s what disco die-hards are saying about Ace of Base’s danceable album, which climbed from No. 9 to No. 3 on the pop chart. Some fans are buying it for the title song, which danced to the top of the pop singles chart. The Swedish group’s album also includes its smash single from half a year ago, “All That She Wants,” which is still selling (No. 24 on the pop singles chart). R. Kelly, who specializes in steamy songs, is bumping and grinding his way to the top of the charts. His “Bump ‘n’ Grind” single is No. 6 on the pop chart and his album, “12 Play,” is No. 2. Tom Petty’s “Greatest Hits” continues to be a strong seller (No. 9), thanks to a hit single “Mary Jane’s Last Dance.” Crash Test Dummies’ “God Shuffled His Feet” jumped from No. 32 to No. 21 and seems destined for the Top 10.

* The soundtrack from the Winona Ryder movie is bounding up the chart, this week leaping from No. 57 to No. 17. The Knack’s old “My Sharona” is one of the album’s big songs, as well as Big Mountain’s remake of Peter Frampton’s “Baby, I Love Your Way.” The soundtrack also features songs by U2, World Party and Dinosaur Jr.
