New Law in Orange Requires Fire-Retardant Roofs

ORANGE — Property owners must begin complying April 21 with a new city ordinance that requires new roofs be made from fire-retardant materials.
The ordinance, which was unanimously approved by the City Council in March, was drafted in response to the October, 1993, Stagecoach fire.
Seven homes in east Orange suffered significant damage, said fire officials, who added that the loss would have been less if the homes had used fire-retardant roofing materials.
The new ordinance also prohibits roofing over wood shakes or wood shingles. The ordinance applies only to new construction and homeowners putting on new roofs.
