AT&T; Settles Gender Discrimination Suit: A judge has approved a $3.3-million settlement of a 17-year-old gender discrimination lawsuit against AT&T; Corp. U.S. District Judge George Howard Jr. approved the settlement, which calls for $1.8 million to be paid to current and former female employees who claim AT&T; paid them less than men or refused to promote them because of their sex. The remainder of the money is for attorneys’ fees and litigation expenses, as well as possible payments to other members of the class action lawsuit. AT&T; did not admit discrimination against female employees. In all, 1,600 women who worked at various units from 1976 to 1989 are to be compensated. The company will pay from $100 to $35,335 to each of them.
