CAMARILLO : Amendment Targets Certain Magazines

Believing that minors should not be exposed to sexually explicit magazines while patronizing convenience stores, the Camarillo City Council has voted to require shopkeepers to place covers over racks holding those publications.

The council voted unanimously Wednesday to change the city’s zoning law to require the installation of so-called blinders over the racks holding sexually explicit material.

The amendment must return to the council at its Nov. 2 meeting for final approval.

During Wednesday’s meeting, Councilman David Smith told a group of supporters of the rack restrictions that although the zoning change would help screen the overtly explicit publications from the view of children, it might not serve to block certain magazines that, for instance, carry a cover photograph of a man or woman wearing bathing attire or lingerie.

“In other words, I want you to know this (amendment) will have limits,” Smith said. “It may not do all that you want it to do.”
