Denver Baggage System Passes Key Test: The success of the $61.7-million backup system at Denver International Airport gives engineers reason to believe the airport will be ready to open by the Feb. 28 target date, a project spokesman said. The system moved about 42 bags a minute in a test run Thursday; the system is designed to move 30 bags a minute. Denver Mayor Wellington Webb called for the backup system in May after the airport’s opening was postponed a fourth time by problems with the automated baggage system. The test results signal a substantial completion of bag-moving machinery for part of the terminal. To make the target opening date, installation will have to go smoothly on the remainder of the project.
