Quarter Leaves Rockets Spent

David Robinson had 25 points and helped the San Antonio Spurs outscore the Houston Rockets, 28-9, in the fourth quarter Sunday for a 93-79 victory at San Antonio.

Chuck Person’s three-point shot early in the fourth quarter capped a 16-0 burst that put the Spurs ahead for the first time since the first quarter. Robinson scored 12 of his 25 points and Person had all eight of his points in the final quarter.

Trailing, 68-53, late in the third quarter, the Spurs used seven points from Vinny Del Negro to outscore the Rockets, 12-2. Del Negro’s three-point basket with 39.7 seconds remaining made the score 70-65.

The Spurs continued the run at the start of the fourth quarter, and Person’s three-point basket gave San Antonio a 72-70 lead with 9:08 to play.

Houston’s offense was still sputtering as San Antonio stretched its lead to 93-77 when Robinson’s three-point basket ended an 11-0 run.

Chicago 110, Indiana 102--The 1-2 scoring punch of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, along with the rebounding of Dennis Rodman, was too much of a hurdle for the Pacers at Indianapolis.

Jordan scored 44 points and Pippen had a season-high 40. It was only the ninth time in NBA history that two teammates scored more than 40 points in a game and extended the Bulls’ current winning streak to five and pushed their league-best record to 46-5.

Dennis Rodman, the league’s leading rebounder, contributed 23 rebounds to the victory as Chicago had a 52-44 edge on the boards.

Seattle 118, Vancouver 109--Shawn Kemp had 25 points and 12 rebounds for the SuperSonics at Vancouver.

With the score tied, 93-93, Seattle pulled away with a 9-0 run. Detlef Schrempf started the surge with two foul shots, Gary Payton made a three-point shot and Hersey Hawkins added two foul shots and scored inside.

Payton had 19 points, seven assists and five steals. Schrempf added 17 points and Hawkins 14.

Charlotte 122, Milwaukee 99--Glen Rice scored 32 points and fueled two runs at Charlotte that helped the Hornets to their first three-game winning streak since November.

Rice also had five assists and Larry Johnson had 29 points as the Hornets recorded their most lopsided victory of the season.

Washington 108, Minnesota 96--Juwan Howard and Rasheed Wallace sparked a third-quarter rally at Minneapolis that helped the Bullets stop a six-game losing streak.

Howard had 30 points and 11 rebounds and Wallace added 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Bullets, who also stopped an eight-game road losing streak.

Denver 117, Boston 93--Tom Hammonds had 26 points and 12 rebounds and Jalen Rose matched a career-high with 16 assists at Denver as the Nuggets ended a three-game losing streak.

David Wesley and Eric Williams had 19 points each for the Celtics, who lost for the seventh time in their last 11 games.

Atlanta 93, Portland 90--Mookie Blaylock’s three-point basket and Andrew Lang’s free throw lifted the Hawks at Portland, Ore.

Blaylock, who had 16 points, tied the score at 90 on his three-point basket with 1:43 left in the game. Lang’s free throw put the Hawks ahead, 91-90. Blaylock made two free throws with a second remaining for the final score.
