Tour in Doubt: The scheduled West Coast debut of the critically lauded German new music group, Ensemble Modern, may be canceled due to a lack of funds. The 27-member ensemble, which is scheduled to perform with composer John Adams April 30 at UCLA’s Veterans Wadsworth Theatre (in association with the L.A. Philharmonic Assn.) and May 1 at the Irvine Barclay Theatre (presented by the Orange County Philharmonic Society), has until Thursday to raise $75,000 or will cancel the second leg of its first-ever U.S. tour, New York-based tour promoter Frank Solomon said Friday. Solomon said the shortfall resulted when two sponsors dropped out; German donors were apparently hesitant because the company’s program--”From Adams to Zappa”--features music by the contemporary American composers Adams and rock musician Frank Zappa and does not reflect German music. The company begins a six-date East Coast tour on April 13, for which funding has been secured.
