World IN BRIEF : MEXICO : Ex-Official Charged in Woman’s Torture

Mexico City’s former intelligence director was indicted on charges he tortured a woman to extract information about the 1994 slaying of Francisco Ruiz Massieu, a top member of Mexico’s ruling party. A federal judge denied bail for Enrique Arenal Alonso, former director of intelligence for the federal Judicial Police. Alonso, the highest-ranking official to be indicted on such charges, also was charged with abuse of authority. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison and would be prohibited from holding office for 30 years.
