Moraga Campolindo 77, Cerritos Valley Christian 60--After leading by six points in the first quarter, Valley Christian went cold and lost in the Division IV final for the second year in a row.
“We made some big-time mistakes in the second quarter and it really cost us,” said Valley Christian Coach Eleanor Dykstra, whose team was outscored, 23-12, in the second quarter, and 26-13 in the third.
Campolindo (34-1) defeated Valley Christian (31-1) in last year’s final, 62-37.
The Crusaders entered the game as the only undefeated team in the state, but they shot only 42% from the floor, committed 16 turnovers and were outrebounded, 40-26.
Senior guard Kiyoko Miller, a transfer student who played at Brea-Olinda the previous three seasons, led Valley Christian with 25 points and seven assists. Junior guard Monique Toney scored 16 points.
Campolindo, which converted 16 of 27 free throws compared to four of six for Valley Christian, held double-digit leads most of the second half.
Senior Tracy Morris, a 6-foot-2 forward, turned in one of her best performances of the season for the Cougars with a game-high 26 points, 21 rebounds and six assists.
