Beaten Baby Likely to Survive, but Effects Will Linger, Doctors Say

OAKLAND — An infant who was severely beaten after a kindergartner and 8-year-old twin boys allegedly broke into his Richmond home is likely to survive the ordeal, a doctor said Thursday.
The baby, Ignacio Bermudez Jr., suffered two skull fractures and bleeding inside his brain in the April 22 attack. He was taken off a ventilator Wednesday and was breathing on his own.
On Thursday, doctors at Children’s Hospital in Oakland said the 5-week-old boy will probably live, but that there will be lifelong physical reminders of the attack. “His lungs have healed from the pneumonia he had last week, but his brain function is still very abnormal . . . and he’s not fully conscious,” said Dr. Timothy Yeh.
Permanent brain damage is likely, Yeh said.
A 6-year-old boy has been charged with attempted murder in the beating.
