State OKs 5 Cities’ Trash Diversion Plans

A state board has approved plans by five cities to reduce the waste they send to landfills by at least half by the year 2000.
La Habra, Mission Viejo, Tustin, Villa Park and Yorba Linda presented plans to the California Integrated Waste Management Board that include public education, expanded curbside recycling and composting facilities for grass and yard clippings.
State law requires that cities divert at least 50% of their solid waste from landfills by the turn of the century.
Yorba Linda officials projected the highest amount of waste diversion at 58%.
