Coasting Into Town to Fight AIDS

The ride has been long and grueling, with sizzling temperatures to boot, but all smiles are expected on Saturday, as the more than 2,000 cyclists from all walks of life roll into West Hollywood Park with California AIDS Ride III.
The park marks the end of a 525-mile bike ride that began in San Francisco on Sunday. Many of the participants are riding in memory of friends and family who have died of complications of AIDS; others are HIV-positive themselves. The riders are completing their mission by adding $7.9 million to the coffers of the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.
Entertainer Sandra Bernhard is among the celebrities who will participate in the closing ceremonies, which are to take place at 3:30 p.m. Music and presentations are planned at West Hollywood Park, San Vicente Boulevard and Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood, as the riders will pedal in wearing the colors of the rainbow.
The San Francisco-to-L.A. ride is one of five scheduled this year; the next one is scheduled from Philadelphia to Washington, June 21-23.
