Deadline Today for El Toro Comments

Today is the final day for Orange County residents to comment on a proposal to develop a major international airport at El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.
The County Board of Supervisors is considering ways to reuse the base when the military abandons it by mid-1999. Options include a passenger-cargo airport, a cargo-general aviation airport and a third proposal that would convert the base for a mix of uses, including a campus, businesses, homes, recreation areas and visitor attractions.
Those who wish to comment on a draft environmental impact report analyzing the three options or to raise questions have until 5 p.m. today to submit them. Comments postmarked today should be mailed to Paul Lanning, County of Orange, P.O. Box 4048, Santa Ana, CA 92702, or faxed to (714) 834-6132.
The final environmental report will include public comments and must answer questions posed about the base reuse plans, officials said.
