Fog Triggers Fatal Pileup on I-10 Spans

Dense fog triggered a series of chain-reaction crashes on Interstate 10 involving at least 70 vehicles, including two buses and an ambulance. One person was killed and at least 29 were injured. Visibility was about 50 feet on the 5-mile, twin-span I-10 bridge across Lake Pontchartrain between New Orleans and Slidell. A 34-year-old New Orleans-area woman was killed, two people were critically injured and at least 27 others went to hospitals with less serious injuries. Eastbound and westbound lanes were shut for eight hours after the pileups.
