Whisler Propels Paraclete With Support from Friends

Center Kim Whisler, the tournament most valuable player, had 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead Paraclete High over L.A. Baptist, 61-24, Saturday night in the championship game of the L.A. Baptist girls’ basketball tournament.

“She’s our best player,” Paraclete Coach Susan Hervey said of the 6-foot-4 senior. “But all of our players are capable of scoring, and we proved that tonight.”

All-tournament selection Alicia Parra added 14 points and eight assists for the Spirits (8-2).

Whisler, who has signed with the University of San Francisco, had 71 points and 32 rebounds in three tournament games.

Deanna Bergeson had eight points and eight assists for the Knights (4-5) and was named all-tournament.

Paraclete scored 15 fast-break baskets after L.A. Baptist turnovers and led, 34-16, at halftime.

Notre Dame 62, St. Genevieve 22--Michelle Barraza had 15 points and Judy Diaz added 13 for the Knights (5-8) in the third-place game.

Providence 45, Highland 37--Alina Tech scored 16 points to lead the Pioneers in the fifth-place game.
