Penberthy’s Mastery Leads Mustangs to Title

Mike Penberthy scored 33 points to help The Master’s College to a 92-72 victory over Concordia on Saturday in the championship game of the Concordia men’s basketball tournament at Irvine.

Penberthy, an NAIA Division I All-American last season, made 11 of 16 shots, including eight of 12 from three-point range, and the Mustangs (11-4) posted their fifth consecutive victory.

Lewis & Clark 65, Cal Lutheran 53--Brian Capella scored 16 points for the Kingsmen (8-2) in the final of the UC Santa Cruz tournament.

Valley 70, Hancock 55--The Monarchs scored 18 of the final 20 points in the Western State Conference interdivisional game.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal State Northridge 61, Eastern Washington 49--Lisa Vaillancourt scored 18 points and Tammie Mills had 15 points and seven assists to pace the visiting Matadors (3-9, 1-1) in a Big Sky Conference game.

Cerro Coso 81, Antelope Valley 60--Stacey Hartwell’s 25 points and 18 rebounds weren’t enough for the Marauders (5-9, 0-1) in a Foothill Conference game.

Valley 80, Santa Barbara 42--Shawanda Hotchkiss had 20 points and eight rebounds for the Monarchs (11-7) in a Western State Conference game at Santa Barbara.

Canyons 132, Oxnard 26--La Cresha Clark had 39 points and eight steals, Gohar Tumanian added 27 points and 19 rebounds while Kyetra Brown had 15 points, 16 assists and 10 steals for the Cougars (13-4, 1-1) in a WSC game.

Ventura 54, Glendale 26--Cindi Jensen scored 16 points for the Pirates (17-1) in a WSC game.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Oak Park 61, Village Christian 53--Randy Gastwirt had 17 points and Josh Rattray added 15 for the Eagles (9-4) at Village Christian.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Oxnard 72, Santa Barbara 66-- Sophomore Jaline Bradley had 24 points and seven assists for the Yellowjackets (6-5) in a Channel League opener at Oxnard.

Moorpark 72, Newbury Park 43--Tracey Milburn had 18 points, 11 rebounds, and seven steals for the Musketeers (11-1) at Moorpark.

Buena 82, Ventura 33--Renae Hofmann scored 22 points for the Bulldogs in a Channel League game at Buena.
