REMEMBERING KING’S DREAM: The San Fernando Valley Interfaith Council is gearing up for its ninth annual service to honor slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King. The service is themed “Make Real the Dream” and will feature music by an interfaith choir under the direction of Elder James Logan, minister of music at Pacoima’s Christ Memorial Church of God in Christ. In keeping with the interfaith tradition, several spiritual leaders will speak, including Rabbi Stewart Vogel of Temple Aliyah in Woodland Hills, the Rev. Fisher Robinson, vicar of African American Ministries for the Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, and the Rev. Lydia Jackson-Waters, pastor of the Crossroads-Nija Panda United Methodist Church in Compton. The Martin Luther King Day event will begin at 7 p.m. Jan. 20 at St. John Eudes Catholic Church, 9901 Mason Ave., Chatsworth. Admission is free, however a freewill donation will be taken. Also on Martin Luther King Day, a “Day of Dialogue” sponsored by Temple Kol Tikvah and El Beth El Apostolic Church of Pacoima will be held from noon to 2 p.m. at the synagogue at 20400 Ventura Blvd., Woodland Hills. Admission is free, but advance registration is required. (818) 348-0670.
LECTURE SERIES: Popular KABC talk radio host Larry Elder will begin a four-part lecture series Tuesday at the University of Judaism with a talk on “The Case Against Black Anti-Semitism.” Elder will explore the historical and current relationships between African Americans and Jews. Other lectures in the series are “Affirmative Action: How It Harms Society” on Jan. 21; “America and Its Welfare State” on Jan. 28; and “How Much Racism Is There?” on Feb. 4. CELEBRATION: The parishioners of St. Genevieve Catholic Church will hold their annual Celebration of the Infant Jesus (Santo Nino) Sunday featuring a special Mass at 12:30 p.m. and 1 1/2-mile street procession at 2:30 p.m. starting from the church parking lot at 14061 Roscoe Blvd., Panorama City. A dinner and dance, with live entertainment, will be held after the parade. Admission is free. (818) 894-2261.
FROM THE HEART: The trio Heartfelt will be perform contemporary Christian songs Sunday night at Reseda Baptist Church, 18644 Sherman Way. Mark Vogel, director of music and worship at the church, formed the group in 1990 along with Keith and Dena Rice. Opening the 7 p.m. concert will be Christian performers Blake Ewing, Mandie Pinto, ‘Nita Whitaker and Kathryn Zaremba. Admission is free. (818) 881-3651.
WOMEN’S SPIRITUALITY: A monthly gathering of “Women at the Well”--providing an opportunity for women of all faiths to deepen their spirituality and offer mutual support--will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Holy Spirit Retreat Center. Each session includes time for input and meditation, quiet reflection and prayer. Participants may attend either session monthly through June. EDUCATION CONFERENCE: “Tradition and Change” will be the focus of the Bureau of Jewish Education’s Conference for Religious School Educators to be held Jan. 19 at the Skirball Cultural Center. Elliot Dorff, rector and University of Judaism philosophy professor, will speak on “Conservative Judaism: Beliefs and Practices,” and David Ellenson, professor of Jewish Religious Thought at Hebrew Union College-Institute of Religion, will address “Reform Judaism in America: History and Beliefs.” The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the center at 2701 Sepulveda Blvd., in Sepulveda Pass. MINI-CONCERT: Songwriter and musician Marty Goetz will perform a mini-concert during Sunday morning worship services at Agoura Bible Fellowship. Born and reared in a Jewish family, Goetz became a Christian in 1978. He has performed with Debbie Boone and sung at the 1992 Billy Graham Crusade in Central Park, in addition to other events. EARTH SMART: A seminar titled “Nurtured by Nature--Nurturing Nature: How to Be Earth Well and Raise Earth Literate Children and Grandchildren” will be offered Sunday at Reseda First United Methodist Church, 18120 Saticoy St. A benefit program for Environmental Ministries, the seminar will be presented by Howard Clinebell, pastoral psychologist and author of “Ecotherapy.” Registration begins at 1:30 p.m., with the seminar from 2 to 5 p.m. Cost is $10 for singles, $15 for couples and $5 for students. BOOK DISCUSSION: “The Oath” by Elie Wiesel will be the topic of a monthly book discussion group held at Temple Ramat Zion. The novel is about a man who takes an oath not to tell how a town was destroyed in an anti-Jewish riot prior to World War II.
