Bob Lyon of Agua Dulce took a string of 92 consecutive NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Tour appearances into the 1997 season that began last week.
There have been 188 NFSWT events in the past 11 years, and Lyon has started in 147 of them.
His 92 consecutive starts rank second on the tour’s all-time list behind the record of 106 set by Ron Hornaday Jr., who lived in Palmdale and was a regular winner at Saugus Speedway before the track closed in July, 1995.

Valencia High sophomore forward Eskias McDaniels entered Friday’s Foothill League opener against Burbank having made 29 of 30 free throws, a percentage of 96.7.
*
Saugus senior soccer forward Jeff Hammond has scored 19 goals in 14 matches for the Centurions (10-2-2).

Most teams strive for perfection, but even that wouldn’t have been good enough for the La Canada girls’ basketball team last Friday night.
During the Spartans’ 89-38 loss to Bell-Jeff they shot 37% from the field, which isn’t tremendously horrific.
But the Spartans took just 38 shots, making 14 of them.
Had the Spartans made all of their shots from the field, which included seven three-pointers, they would have scored 83 points and still lost.
*
Matt Moore, La Canada High’s 6-foot-7 junior center, is shooting 75.6% from the field.
*
The boys’ basketball teams of Antelope Valley (11-5) and Burroughs (7-8) highs seem to be headed in opposite directions but they have the same record on their home courts--1-0.
*
Mike Penberthy of The Master’s College, who is averaging 27.5 points per game, has scored 30 or more points in six of the Mustangs’ 16 games this season.
The 6-3 senior guard is closing in on the school career scoring record of 2,378 set by Carl Turner between 1976-80.
Penberthy has 2,191 points during his career at Master’s, an average of 18.6 a game.

Although the St. Bonaventure High girls’ basketball team has a record of 4-8, the Seraphs are averaging an impressive 17.7 steals a game.
