Loara Upsets Canyon, 9-8, in Loara Tournament

Loara shortstop Archie Lappin threw out Tommy Duarte at third for the final out of the Saxons’ 9-8 upset over Canyon Saturday at Glover Stadium in the second round of the Loara Tournament.
Canyon (1-1) is the nation’s top-ranked high school baseball team.
Carlos Ortiz hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Loara (2-0) a 9-8 lead. Ortiz also hit a two-run triple in the third inning and a solo home run in the fifth.
In other Loara Tournament games:
Katella 4, Los Alamitos 3--Tony Alcantar drove in Mike Martinez with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning for Katella (2-0). Rollie Wing went three for three to lead Los Alamitos (1-1).
Irvine 4, Kennedy 3 (8)--Ryan Brucker drove in Scott Zicarelli with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the eighth for Irvine (1-1). Garrett Sabol hit a home run in the top of the seventh inning to tie the score, 3-3, for Kennedy (0-2).
In nonleague softball:
Canyon 5-8, Loara 0-4--Veronica Lopez pitched a no-hitter, striking out 13, in the first game for Canyon (2-0). The only baserunners for Loara (0-2) came on a dropped third strike with two outs in the third and an error in the sixth.
In nonleague tennis:
Laguna Beach 10, Mission Viejo 8--Junior Aaron Talarico upset his third highly ranked opponent in two days with a 6-4 victory over Eric Bachelor to lead the Artists to an upset of seventh-ranked Mission Viejo. Friday, Talarico defeated Dana Hills’ Brandon Fallon, 7-5, and Brian Kent, 6-2. He is 12-0 in singles.
