A Call for Restraint

I am writing in response to “Belting Them In” (Taking the Kids, Feb. 16). There is a much simpler and cheaper answer to the problem of unrestrained babies in danger from sudden turbulence aboard planes. It’s called an extension seat belt.

This is a baby-sized seat belt that loops through the parent’s belt so that both baby and parent are secure. It is available on many foreign carriers. I have used it for my children on flights throughout Asia and Australia. This system does not require the purchase of another expensive seat or that the parent add a heavy and bulky car seat to their carry-on items.

While traveling in the U.S. I have never been offered the use of this type of seat belt and am astounded that U.S. carriers don’t offer it to passengers flying with infants.
