Spotlight: Washington Mutual Unveils Inner-City Loan Plan

Seattle-based Washington Mutual Inc., as expected, announced an unprecedented $75-billion inner-city loan commitment over 10 years. But responding to criticisms from the Greenlining Institute and some other community groups that the pledge is vague, Chairman Kerry Killinger said he would talk with communities to establish specifics. The pledge is $5 billion more than one made by H.F. Ahmanson & Co., which is locked in a battle with the thrift to acquire Great Western Financial.
