Councilman Jeffery M. Thomas has been chosen to succeed Mayor Tracy Wills Worley, who stepped down from her post this week.
The mayor’s job, which mostly consists of overseeing City Council meetings and representing the city at public functions, rotates annually among the five council members.
Councilman Thomas R. Saltarelli, who was mayor in 1994, was chosen mayor pro tem.
Thomas, who will serve as mayor for the first time, noted in his acceptance speech that political battles between council members during the last few years seem to have cooled, and said he is looking forward to a productive year.
Thomas, 40, was first elected in 1992 and was reelected to a four-year term in 1996. He is the vice president of an investment management firm.
