Nothing Warm and Fuzzy About Zoeller’s Remark
- Share via
To the Viewpoint letter writers of April 19 like Larry Crawford (“Here we go again. Time to blame the big, bad, white boogeyman.”), I have two words for you--Fuzzy Zoeller. I realize that not all whites in sports are racists. I also am aware that not all African Americans are pathological because they see racism, which is so deeply embroidered in the fabric of American institutions, also alive and well in sports.
To Fuzzy Zoeller: When Abraham Lincoln was told his most successful general, Ulysses S. Grant, was a drunk, Lincoln asked what brand of whiskey Grant drank so that it could be given to all his generals. After Tiger Woods’ monumental win in the Masters, I suggest Mr. Zoeller try his diet rather than deride it.

Bogey, Fuzzy; definite bogey.

Fuzzy, keep a lid on it. The politically correct fascists can’t take a joke and if you’re not careful, Jesse Jackson--the paragon of opportunism--might turn up at the U.S. Open.

While I feel that Fuzzy Zoeller’s remarks were in poor taste, there is no reason for him to be blasted by the news media or his sponsors. The problem lies with Tiger in that he racially sets himself apart by calling himself an African American (in the past) and now this new separate race called “Cablinasian.” Why doesn’t Tiger Woods just call himself an American? Isn’t he proud to be one?

Tiger Woods invented a word to try to describe his diverse racial background. The word is too difficult to pronounce and will never catch on.
I have a better word for you, Tiger. Just call yourself “The Eclectic Man.”

There is nothing stereotypical about Tiger Woods . . . his looks, his ethnicity, his personality or his achievements. Yet, there are those “nice guys” who reach into their deepest, darkest, dankest souls to stereotype him. How little we’ve grown.

My wife, who has no interest in golf and who wouldn’t know Tommy Tolles from Tommy Tune, asked to watch the last round of the Masters. Tiger Woods isn’t only a great golfer, he is a miracle worker.
