Prop. 209

* Jennifer Garrett’s comments on Prop. 209 and affirmative action (letter, April 18) are typical of most opponents. She says, “A system that admits individuals to colleges and jobs based on their ethnicity and not their ability is a travesty of the American dream of ‘all men are equal.’ ”
If not forced to favor ethnic minorities or women, Anglos have historically selected mostly their own kind in hiring, promoting and admitting practices. They live in a dream world (and not the “American dream” world) if they believe that discrimination against ethnic minorities and women would not continue if affirmative action requirements and court intervention were eliminated.
