Lease for Deputies’ House Ended

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday rid itself of a house in Gorman that figured prominently in a $1-million sexual discrimination lawsuit settled by the county last year.
The house--which had served as the home of sheriff’s deputies stationed at the Gorman substation--became the focus of attention after Deputy Mark Suhr and his wife, Caryn, sued the Sheriff’s Department for sexual discrimination.
The Suhrs maintained that the unpaid work--including cleaning jail cells--that Caryn Suhr was required to perform at the station was unfair.
The county settled with the Suhrs for $1.1 million, and deputies no longer live in the house.
Though the Sheriff’s Department will no longer lease the house, it will continue to lease the Gorman substation, which includes a garage and jail building.
The county will pay $470 per month--instead of $600--to lease the substation until 2004.
