Royal’s Flanagan Engineers a Move to Cal Poly (SLO)

Dual-sport athlete Nick Flanagan of Royal High has decided to attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and walk on to the basketball team.

Flanagan averaged 16.4 points as a forward for the Highlanders but drew more recruiting interest as an opposite hitter in volleyball.

Pepperdine was interested enough to consider a partial volleyball scholarship but Flanagan chose Cal Poly because he could major in chemical or biochemical engineering.

“If Pepperdine had an engineering program, I’d be there now,” said the 6-foot-6 Flanagan, who leads the Highlanders in kills. “But if I was going to Pepperdine, I’d have to give up my major. It’s not a reflection of my liking basketball more than volleyball or anything, but for engineering, Cal Poly is probably one of the top four or five schools on the west coast.”

Miller’s time: Ben Miller, an offensive lineman who helped St. Bonaventure win the 1996 Southern Section Division X title, has committed to Ohio Wesleyan University.

Committed: Will Ferrell, a 6-5, 270-pound offensive tackle from Rio Mesa High, has committed to Chapman University.

New deal: The Buena baseball team entered the week riding a three-game win streak--and with a reshuffled infield to boot.

The Bulldogs, who have struggled after being picked as the preseason league favorite, lost third baseman Alex Graham and the second base platoon of Paul Shirey and Tim Patterson to academic ineligibility in late April.

Coach Stan Hedegard moved Eddie Loya back to second base from shortstop, where he labored out of position for much of the season.

With 11 players remaining on the roster, Hedegard called up freshman shortstop Fernando Hernandez, who has played well.

“Sometimes adversity gets a team to rally,” Hedegard said.

Streaky: Highland High has not lost a Golden League boys’ volleyball match in more than four years. After two close calls last week, it appears the Bulldogs will go undefeated again.

Middle blocker Tom Haight had 30 kills and 11 blocks and Highland erased a 2-0 deficit against Littlerock. Haight had a career-high 35 kills in a five-game win over Quartz Hill, the team with the best chance to end Highland’s league win streak, now at 48 matches.

“I’d probably hold myself responsible if it ended,” Haight said.
