Van Nuys Is Doubles Trouble for Kennedy

Bradley Herman and Peter Kung swept their sets at No. 1 doubles to lead top-seeded Van Nuys High to a 19 1/2-10 victory over Kennedy on Tuesday in the semifinals of the City Section 3-A Division boys’ tennis playoffs at Studio City Racquet Centre.

The Wolves (15-1) won seven of nine doubles matches and split 16 singles matches.

For Kennedy (10-6), Sonny Warda swept his sets at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.

Eagle Rock 16 1/2, Birmingham, 13--Anthony Gabriele (28-0) scored a 6-3, 6-4, 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 1 singles and Josh Smith and Greg Goodfried swept, 6-1, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles, but the second-seeded Braves (10-6) lost to the third-seeded Eagles (15-1) in a 3-A Division semifinal at the Studio City Racquet Centre.

Burroughs 9, Canyon 9--Tim Kelly swept at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, and the Indians won a Foothill League match on games, 77-66.

The Cowboys didn’t have a No. 3 singles player, giving Burroughs (6-12, 3-6) three singles victories by 6-0 scores.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Harvard-Westlake d. Notre Dame, 15-6, 15-11, 15-9--Trevor Julian had 15 kills and David Krakow added eight for Harvard-Westlake in the Mission League match at Notre Dame.

Justin Ball had nine kills and Paul Konzen had 10 digs for Notre Dame (3-10, 3-8).

Buena d. San Marcos, 15-2, 15-9, 12-15 15-5--Joe Callahan had 17 kills and four aces, Matt Prosser had 16 kills, eight blocks and seven aces, and Josh Tennen added 46 assists for the Bulldogs (10-4, 8-4), who clinched a playoff berth with a Channel League victory at Buena.

Salesian d. Bell-Jeff, 15-6, 15-13, 15-13--Marcos Flores had 11 kills and seven blocks for the Guards (13-5, 9-2), who were denied a share of the Santa Fe League lead at Salesian (16-0, 11-0).

L.A. Baptist d. Crossroads, 15-7, 13-15, 17-15, 15-12--Peter DePew had 24 kills and seven blocks and Nick Kaprelian had 19 kills for the Knights (6-5, 5-4) in an Alpha Leauge match at L.A. Baptist.

BOYS’ TRACK

Golden League finals--Markus Carr of Palmdale won the long jump and triple jump at Littlerock High.

Carr, who is headed to Cal State Northridge on a basketball scholarship, leaped a wind-aided 21-6 in the long jump and bounded 44-5 1/4 in the triple jump.

The remainder of the finals will be contested Friday at Antelope Valley College.

GIRLS’ TRACK

Golden League finals--Quartz Hill senior Kenya Corley won the long jump and Littlerock sophomore Jameka Taylor took the triple jump at Littlerock High.

Corley, who won the 1996 Southern Section Division I title for Antelope Valley, leaped a wind-aided 18-3 1/2 in the long jump and Taylor bounded 35-2 1/4 in the triple jump while jumping into a headwind.
