More than two months after the City Council unveiled its plan to beautify the Balboa Peninsula, many residents continue to confront the panel with concerns about the project.
At a recent council meeting, during which city officials were to debate ways to finance the $8.3 million in improvements, dozens of residents again voiced their displeasure with the plans.
“A lot of us still have a lot of concerns,” said resident Martha Durkee. “They have said they are going to do community outreach and listen to our concerns, but they are not doing it.”
City officials have said they planned to conduct community outreach but not until they start voting on specifics of the plan.
The city’s plans call for creating bed and breakfast zones, adding park space and landscaping main thoroughfares. The changes, according to city officials, should boost local business and attract more visitors.
Because of the public pressure, the council has eliminated some of the more controversial elements of the plan, such as creating redevelopment zones, eliminating street parking on Balboa Boulevard and moving moorings to make way for visiting yachtsmen.
