Pacific Communities Builders of Newport Beach has been granted approval to build 13 condominiums on the southwest corner of Alta Vista and Van Buren streets.
The City Council recently voted 3 to 2 to allow the development on a nearly three-acre site that was created when Alta Vista was extended to Van Buren. The new homes will be an extension of the residential development to the south.
“I think this is going to be a good addition to the tract,” Councilwoman Carol Downey said.
Councilwomen Maria Moreno and Constance Underhill voted against the project because of environmental concerns. The development site has three active oil wells, and the new homes will be built 100 feet from the wells.
The developer said the wells will be enclosed with chain-link fencing and barbed wire for safety.
