Capistrano Valley Wins Wild-Card Match

Michael Nguyen improved his singles record to 52-5 as Capistrano Valley defeated Santa Ana, 14-4, in a Division I wild-card tennis match Friday at Capistrano Valley.
Nguyen swept, 6-0, 6-3, 6-1, for the Cougars, who advance to play Los Alamitos in the first round Tuesday.
Capistrano Valley (17-3) played without seniors Scott Merryman, its top singles player, as well as Rob Hall and Ryan Thurlow, who were attending their prom.
Scott Aleali and David Jones, who were promoted from the junior varsity, swept in doubles, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2, for the Cougars.
In other Division I matches:
Esperanza 15, Long Beach Poly 3--Tom Lloyd swept, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, to improve to 64-5 in singles for Esperanza (13-8), which advanced to play top-seeded Woodbridge on Tuesday. Brandon Vazarian also swept in singles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, for the Aztecs.
Los Alamitos 16, Saddleback 2--Los Alamitos, ranked eighth in the county, breezed through its match at home. Bryan Geddes lost only two games in his three-set victory for the Griffins (17-1).
University 16, Long Beach Wilson 2--University (14-5) won eight of nine sets in singles, including Greg Biorkman, who swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, in the wild-card match at University. The Trojans travel to Dana Hills for a first-round match Tuesday.
In Division II:
Loara 12, La Verne Damien 6--Loara’s doubles teams won eight of nine sets, including Tatsu Akeda and Al Spain, who swept, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2, and Steve Toh and Jonathan Wijono, who swept, 7-5, 6-3, 6-0. The Saxons (11-10) travel to Santa Margarita for a first-round match Tuesday.
In Division III:
Western 12, Bellflower 6--Rodel Valdez and David Heck swept, 7-5, 6-1, 6-0, and Aidin Yousif and Jesmine Patel swept, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3, in the wild-card match for Western (17-3), which will travel to Troy for a first-round match Tuesday.
