Confusion Over Origin of Poster

Re “Harking Back to a Simpler Time”( May 9): The poster in the picture is incorrectly identified as Chinese. This is a Japanese poster for Sapporo Beer. The Japanese have three different ways of writing--Kanji (Chinese characters) and two phonetic systems, Hiragana and Katakana. The large characters in the upper right corner of the poster are Katakana, which clearly makes this Japanese.

Editor’s Note: The Chinese poster, advertising Sapporo beer and Sensei sake, is from a series of richly colored posters that appeared in Japan-occupied Manchuria in the late 1930s promoting Japanese products.
