Commuter Plane Makes Emergency Landing at Miramar Naval Air Station

SAN DIEGO — A SkyWest commuter plane with 14 passengers and three crew members made an emergency landing Wednesday at Miramar Naval Air Station after its right engine caught fire and was shut down, officials said.
Flight 724 was 18 minutes into its 1 p.m. flight from San Diego to Los Angeles International Airport when a fire-warning light came on. The pilot turned off the engine.
The Embraer 120 Brasilia twin-turboprop aircraft circled to burn off fuel as officials decided to land the aircraft at Miramar Naval Air Station about 13 miles northeast of downtown San Diego.
Nobody on board was hurt during the 2:30 p.m. landing, although the plane did run off the base’s 12,000-foot landing strip after the aircraft’s brakes failed. The right engine showed signs of fire.
“They needed a little bit more than what we had, and they’re parked out there safely in the dirt,” Miramar spokesman Doug Sayers said.
The cause of the engine problem remains under investigation.
