OXNARD — A 77-year-old Westlake man was in critical condition Sunday at a local hospital after crashing his car into a railroad crossing guardrail on Hueneme Road, authorities said.
At 5:30 p.m., Omar Slayter was traveling east near Saviers Road when his car crossed the double yellow line, ran off the north side of the roadway, crossed the railroad tracks and hit the rail, said Oxnard Police Traffic Investigator Joe Kaniewski.
Authorities said Slayter may have fallen asleep or suffered a heart attack prior to the crash. Witnesses found him slumped over the steering wheel, and called authorities.
Slayter was being treated in the emergency room of St. John’s Regional Medical Center late Sunday, a hospital spokeswoman said.
