BENA, Minn. — Police found two bodies in a lake they believe to be friends who drowned while trying to canoe the length of the Mississippi River.
Authorities found the bodies and their overturned canoe in Lake Winnibigoshish on Saturday, the Cass County sheriff’s office said.
They are believed to be Jonathan C. Hoare, 26, of St. Louis, and Mark E. Huckabay, 37, of San Francisco, who have been missing since May 9.
Hoare and Huckabay were trying to canoe from the headwaters of the Mississippi River at Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico, a distance of more than 2,300 miles. Lake Winnibigoshish is about 70 miles downriver from Lake Itasca.
