3-Day Family Festival Slated for 15th Year

For the 15th year, the city Department of Recreation and Parks will host a three-day Salute to Recreation Family Festival at the Northridge Recreation Center.

Officials expect about 100,000 people this year, said Vicki Israel, recreation supervisor for the West Valley sector of the city department.

Events, which are planned for visitors of all ages from Friday through Sunday, will range from llama rides for children to a dance for seniors.

The festival started in 1982 as an arts and crafts show. Through the years, it has grown to include animal rides, live entertainment, roller coasters, fireworks, a carnival and, this year, a visit from Miss Universe, Brook Mahealani Lee.

Lee ho will ride in the parade and participate in the festival’s Hawaiian Village, Israel said.

Israel said the festival’s success is due to the large turnout each year.

“It’s hard today to get free, quality entertainment,” she said.

The festival opens at 5 p.m. Friday, with a fireworks show planned for 8:45 at the park, 10058 Reseda Blvd.
