BEIJING — China on Thursday announced the appointment of seasoned diplomat Ma Yuzhen as its top civilian official in Hong Kong after the British colony reverts to Beijing’s rule July 1.
Beijing appointed Ma as commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
Ma and Maj. Gen. Liu Zhenwu will be Beijing’s most senior officials in Hong Kong after the hand-over.
Hong Kong residents will run domestic affairs, but foreign affairs and defense will remain the central government’s turf.
Ma, 62, served as China’s consul general in Los Angeles from 1988 to 1991.
