BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — UCLA’s bid for a women’s NCAA outdoor track and field title is on track.
The Bruins lead the meet with 46 points after 10 events and three days. Texas is second with 21 points and Louisiana State third with 20.
Louisiana State, which has won the team title the last 10 years, finally won an event after being scoreless the first two days. The Tigers won the 400-meter relay for the sixth consecutive year and the eighth time in the past nine years.
UCLA junior Suzy Powell placed second in the javelin, tying her personal best with a throw of 179 feet 2 inches.
After 11 men’s events, Texas led with 28 1/2, followed by Southern Methodist with 28 and UCLA with 21. Five-time defending champion Arkansas was sixth with 16.
USC junior Bengt Johansson won the Trojans’ fifth consecutive hammer throw title with a mark of 230-1.
Balazs Kiss won the previous four.
“The key was to stay focused and relaxed,” Johansson said. “I was a little excited but the adrenaline helped. This means a lot. Balazs won four titles and I was second last year, so there were some expectations for me to win.”
