Songs, Speeches to Highlight Flag Day

Patriotic songs and reflective speeches will highlight Camarillo’s Flag Day celebration in Constitution Park at the Arts Pavilion on Saturday from 4 to 5 p.m.

“Even though schoolchildren and government people say the pledge of allegiance a lot, there are some people who never say it,” Councilwoman Charlotte Craven said.

After Valle Lindo School students lead the pledge of allegiance, Rev. Dan Nelson from the First Baptist Church of Camarillo will perform the invocation.

The celebrants will then join a national “Pause for the Pledge,” an event Camarillo residents have participated in every year since it was established by Congress in 1985.

“It’s a time of silence to remind everybody about our country, structure of our government and to get some people thinking about what the flag and country mean to them,” Craven said.

U.S. Navy Capt. James Hickerson will tell what the flag means to him, reflecting on his experiences as a prisoner in the Vietnam War.
