Theme Park Where Fatal Collapse of Water Slide Occurred to Reopen Today

CONCORD, Calif. — An amusement park where a water slide collapsed two weeks ago, killing a teenager, will reopen today.
Officials at WaterWorld USA and the city of Concord said Friday that the decision was reached after a number of safety inspections.
Mayor Bill McManigal issued a statement saying officials are “sad about the tragedy that took the life of that young woman, and the injury and anguish suffered by the folks at WaterWorld USA on June 2.”
But he went on to say that, “according to the best engineers and safety inspectors in the business, WaterWorld in Concord is a safe place to enjoy summertime.”
Park officials have blamed the accident on a prank.
The Banzai Pipeline collapsed under the weight of about three dozen teenagers from Napa High School who were trying to set a school record by piling onto the ride at once. Quimby Ghilotti, 18, was killed, and 32 others were injured.
