Fullerton Student Held in Newborn’s Death

LOS ANGELES — A Cal State Fullerton student was charged Friday with murder and other charges in the strangulation death of her newborn girl.
Jennifer Garcia, 19, of Bassett is accused of leaving her baby girl in a trash bin in her backyard after giving birth April 10 at home. Garcia’s mother found the baby and confronted her daughter. Both women took the baby to St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton, where the infant was pronounced dead.
She was arrested in Walnut by sheriff’s deputies on Thursday.
The case is the second such set of charges this week involving a Southland college student. USC sophomore Linda Chu, 20, is fighting extradition to Los Angeles after being arrested Wednesday in Niles, Ill. She is charged with strangling her newborn girl after giving birth in her dormitory room at the end of the semester.
Both women are being held on $1-million bail.
