MOVIE MOTHERHOOD

James Bates, in his commentary “In Hollywood, Dad’s Getting Raw Deal” (June 15), mentioned “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” and “Fly Away Home.” These movies follow a new trend in Hollywood where the mother is either dead or nowhere to be found. Dad may be dysfunctional, but Mom is nonexistent. Kind of like roles for women.
According to the Screen Actors Guild, 64% of the roles go to men and 36% to women. I’m sure women starving for roles in Hollywood would love the role of dysfunctional mom. Better dysfunctional than invisible!
