More Study Urged on Plan for Point Dume Beach Boardwalk

After hearing testimony from residents concerned about a state plan to build a boardwalk on the headlands above Point Dume State Beach, the Malibu Planning Commission will recommend further study before any construction begins, officials said Thursday.
A recent proposal by the Department of Parks and Recreation to protect and replant the fragile ecology of the headlands--now crisscrossed by random trails--called for the construction of a boardwalk and observation point overlooking the beach, said Planning Commissioner Jo Ruggles.
Residents said the proposed location would interfere with birds’ migratory patterns, and questioned the boardwalk’s environmental impact.
Ruggles said although the city has no jurisdiction over the state-owned bluffs, the parks department is considering residents’ concerns.
