Lasorda Denies Lobbying for Job

Tom Lasorda, while acknowledging he wants a bigger role in the baseball operation, denied reports Thursday that he is lobbying to replace Fred Claire as the Dodger general manager once Rupert Murdoch buys the team.

“I would like to have more of a baseball role, but that’s not saying I would want somebody’s job,” he said from Cooperstown, N.Y., where he will be inducted into baseball’s Hall of Fame on Sunday.

“I have never lobbied anybody,” he said. “Who would I lobby? Doesn’t Peter O’Malley still own the team?”

It is believed that Lasorda’s friendship with former junk bond financier Michael Milken, an advisor to Murdoch, would help his cause.

“All that I know is, if Murdoch buys the Dodgers, and he wants me to stay with the Dodgers, I would do it,” Lasorda said. “That’s all I’ve ever said about this. I would never try to take somebody’s job.”
