Prisoner Kills Himself With Bailiff’s Gun

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — A jail inmate grabbed a bailiff’s gun Monday at the Isabella County Courthouse, wounding the officer and then killing himself, the sheriff said.
The prisoner began “acting up” during an appearance before Circuit Judge Paul Chamberlain and was ordered returned to his cell, Sheriff Barry DeLau told WSGW radio. Once outside the courtroom, the inmate apparently tried to pull the bailiff’s gun out of its holster, DeLau said. The gun discharged, wounding the officer in the knee, and the inmate ran back into the courtroom, put the gun to his head and shot himself, the sheriff said.
The dead man’s identity was not released. The bailiff was treated at a hospital and released.
