Phillies Have a Grand Day

From Associated Press

Newcomer Billy McMillon and Mike Lieberthal became the first Phillies to hit grand slams in the same game in 76 years as Philadelphia beat the visiting Giants, 12-3, Monday night.

McMillon, obtained from Florida on July 21 for Darren Daulton, was making his Phillie debut.

After singling in the second, he came up with the bases loaded and two outs in the third, and lined a grand slam to right off Mark Gardner (12-7) to put Philadelphia ahead, 4-0. It was his first major league homer.

Lieberthal hit his first career grand slam in the sixth off reliever Terry Mulholland to make the score, 10-2. The last time two Phillies hit grand slams in a game was April 28, 1921, when Ralph Miller and Lee Meadows connected against the Boston Braves.

Pittsburgh 7, Florida 2--Errors by Marlin infielders Edgar Renteria and Bobby Bonilla in the seventh inning helped the Pirates score three runs at Miami.

Jermaine Allensworth went three for five with a solo homer and Dale Sveum added a two-run shot for the Pirates.

Estaban Loaiza (9-8) gave up one run and seven hits in six innings. Moises Alou hit his 17th homer for the Marlins.

Florida starter Kirt Ojala lasted 3 2/3 innings in his debut. Ojala, who spent eight seasons in the minors, started in place of Al Leiter, put on the 15-day disabled list because of a pulled groin.
