Gehry Museum

Having recently returned from a visit to Bilbao, Spain, to which my wife and I went only because of our desire to see the newly opened Guggenheim Museum, I find the urge irresistible to let The Times’ readers know of our reaction:

Frank Gehry and his associates have created a modern-day architectural miracle. Its exterior is a shimmering envelope of planes, curves, strength and grace. Its interior is a perfect match. Without mention of the modern art on display--which is notable--the experience of viewing this magnificent edifice--and of visiting its host city of Bilbao--will last with us for our lifetimes.

Los Angeles would do well to get on with the work of financing and constructing another Gehry miracle: the Disney Concert Hall (“Disney Gives $25 Million to Downtown Concert Hall,” Dec. 2). I am convinced that, in many cultural dimensions, this city--and indeed the world--will be the richer for it.

* By all accounts, the interior of the Disney Concert Hall will be a facility of which we can all be proud. But why doesn’t someone force them to redesign the incredibly ugly exterior?

* In Los Angeles, our cup runneth over with spending on lavish building projects: $1 billion for the Getty Center, $200 million for a new downtown concert hall, $300 million for a new downtown sports arena. Possibly $100-$200 million to re-remodel the Coliseum.

So, how much is being spent on housing for the homeless?
