Regarding your article on Uzbekistan (“Islamic Intrigue,” Nov. 9): The author said he had come to Uzbekistan “last fall,” so I assume he meant September to November of 1996.
I also was in Uzbekistan in October 1996 on a group tour. Your author states: “State tourism agency sanctioned hotels, built in the Soviet era, charge exorbitant rates for substandard accommodations.” But he does not mention the Hotel Bokhoro in Bukhara, where we stayed for two nights. This was a new, clearly first-class Western-style hotel with good service, good beds, plenty of hot water, a good restaurant, and a beautiful lobby. The phones were a problem, but that was a minor irritant.
The mystery was why the state built it. We learned that we were the only guests in the hotel.
Away from the hotel, I certainly agree with your author on sanitation problems. The round hole in the bathroom floor is customary. At a couple of other stops there was no hot water, and tap water was on the gray side.
