“A lot of people wrote off this project because it was just very tough economically and because of the site.. . . With the right tenant mix, I thought this could be successful. Nothing has been done in that area for 20 years.”
NAME: Dan Selleck
AGE: 42
HOME: Agoura
PROFESSION: Real estate developer. With his father, sister and two brothers--including actor Tom Selleck--Dan is a partner in the family-owned Selleck Development Group in Westlake Village.
LATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: The Sellecks have developed projects from strip malls to shopping centers from Torrance to Las Vegas. But their biggest challenge is rebuilding the former General Motors plant in Panorama City. Along with the Voit Cos., the Sellecks are partners in a $75-million retail and industrial complex taking root on 68 acres. Dan Selleck grew up in Van Nuys and remembers cruising Van Nuys Boulevard as a teenager. After the GM plant closed in 1992, the prospects for reusing the site seemed grim, given crime problems and the deteriorating neighborhood. But Selleck saw the potential for a successful retail center has closed deals on key retail tenants including Home Depot, Office Max, a 16-screen Mann Theater and Toys R Us.
GOALS FOR 1998: Supervise construction on The Plant, which he says will have a car motif. He expects the first stores to open by August and looks forward to the complex generating 2,500 local jobs.
