Peace Talks Adjourn; Storms Seen Ahead

Peace talks adjourned for a summer recess, facing new storms over the surrender of guerrilla arms when participants begin the search for a lasting settlement in September. Sinn Fein, the political wing of the Irish Republican Army, met British officials for the first time since a week-old IRA truce took effect and urged its unionist rivals not to quit the talks because of a dispute over “arms decommissioning.” Sinn Fein Vice President Pat Doherty said his delegation pressed for the transfer of about 30 IRA prisoners from jails on the British mainland and the release of hundreds more.
